We are often impressed with presidents and kings. People will spend hours finding out the latest about the favorite celebrities. I'm sure in Noah's day, there were people of seemingly greater political import and higher social status than him. But "Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation" (Gen. 6:9), and it was he that executed the Lord's command to build an ark, a place of safety for his family and the animals, during the raging of the waters.
We live in a world of raging waters, and we often look to political leaders to fix problems and celebrities to lift us out of the blahs of our day-to-day struggles. Really, though, it is the faithful men and women who follow Messiah who are really the important figures in the world. When Abraham interceded for Sodom since the Lord had determined to bring judgement upon that city, Abraham asked the Lord if He would still destroy Sodom if only 10 righteous were found within the city. God's response was "For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it." (Gen. 18:32) Unfortunately, Sodom did not have ten righteous, but the fact remains that it is the righteous, such as Noah, who preserve life and society. It is we who, following the command of the Lord, build our safe havens like Tikvat Ami, where people can find refuge in the midst of a dangerous world. The boards of the ark are held together by love, faithfulness, and obedience to God. So...stay alert in prayer (Colossians 4:2); give generously of your time, finances, and talents (2 Corinthians 9:6, 7; 1 Timothy 5:17, 18), and faithfully attend the times of worship, prayer, and learning in your home congregation. Above all, love God and love one another.
Matthew 22:36-40 (Tree of Life Version) “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in theTorah?” And He said to him, “‘You shall love Adonai your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire Torah and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
